A 100th birthday comes in many forms, and there were several 100th birthday anniversaries in 2023. The Ten Commandments movie, an American silent religious epic film directed by Cecil B. DeMille was released in 1923. The Irish Civil War ended over a century ago, May 1923. On a family level, it would have been our dear John Joseph's 100th birthday. His memory is for a blessing and we acknowledged this 100th birthday with a plaque that went from a digital memento to engraved wooden plaque. The plaque is placed at the Oranmore Library. The library is located in Oranmore, County Galway, Ireland, named after an Irish phrase that means "great spring."

This tribute is dedicated to a true legend, a man whose journey has woven the tapestry of his homeland and the embrace of a new country, Canada.
From the moment he first drew breath in the charming village of Oranmore, Galway, his spirit was ignited with an unwavering passion for his heritage. He carried the Irish flame within him, its warmth and resilience shining through his every endeavor. But destiny had more in store for him than the shores of his birthplace could contain.
Champion of the Hurling Pitch
As a young man, he took his fervor for hurling to great heights, becoming a champion and etching his name in the annals of sporting glory. With each of his four Fitzgibbon Cup triumphs, his spirit soared higher, embodying the indomitable spirit of Ireland and the true essence of competition.
A Scholar and Poet
Yet, his thirst for knowledge was insatiable. Amidst the cheers of the hurling pitch, he found solace in the profound verses of poetry and the wisdom contained within the pages of scholarly works. A lover of literature, he absorbed every word, finding solace and inspiration in the written word and song, carrying the lyrical beauty of his Irish soul wherever he went.
The Call to Serve
The call to serve echoed deep within his being, bringing him to wear the uniform of the Royal Canadian Medical Corps. As a veteran of the Korean War, his dedication and skill as an Army Medical Corps leader saved countless lives, instilling hope in the hearts of those wounded on the battlefield. From the shores of Korea to the decks of mighty vessels, he served as a ship's surgeon, bringing his healing touch to the seas and touching the lives of sailors from every corner of the globe.

Upon his return, he donned the white coat of a public health physician, devoting his life to safeguarding the well-being of his fellow citizens. Tirelessly, he sought to protect and preserve the health of the community he cherished. His commitment to public service knew no bounds, as he embarked on a mission to ensure the vitality of all those under his care.
